The Blue Moon Tonight: A Rare Moment to Pause, Reflect, and Begin Again

Tonight's Full Moon is something a little more unusual than normal.

On 31st May 2026 we experience what is known as a Blue Moon — the second Full Moon to occur within a single calendar month. The first Full Moon of May was the Flower Moon on 1st May, and because the lunar cycle lasts approximately 29.5 days, another Full Moon arrives before the month ends. This rare occurrence is where the phrase "once in a blue moon" comes from. Despite its name, the Moon will not actually appear blue. It will look much like any other Full Moon, although tonight's Moon is also classified as a Micromoon, meaning it is slightly further away from Earth than usual and may appear a little smaller in the sky.

Astronomically, the Blue Moon is simply a quirk of the calendar.

Spiritually, however, many people see it as something far more meaningful.

For centuries, Full Moons have been associated with completion, illumination, awareness, and emotional reflection. They invite us to pause long enough to notice what has been growing beneath the surface of our lives. A Blue Moon can feel even more significant because it is rare. It often arrives as a reminder that life does not always move in straight lines. Sometimes we need an extra moment of clarity before moving forward.

As we approach the middle of the year, this particular Blue Moon offers a beautiful opportunity to look back over the months that have already passed.

What have you learned about yourself?

What has quietly changed?

What are you carrying that no longer belongs to you?

What dreams, hopes, or ideas have been waiting patiently for your attention?

Many people spend so much time focusing on what still needs fixing that they forget to acknowledge how far they have already come. Tonight's Moon encourages us to honour growth that may not always be visible. Healing is often happening beneath the surface long before we can see the results.

The energy of a Full Moon is often described as revealing.

Things we have been avoiding may suddenly feel impossible to ignore.

Emotions we have pushed aside may ask to be felt.

Truths we have been dancing around may finally become clear.

Rather than fearing this, it can be helpful to see it as an invitation. Awareness is often the first step towards change.

Tonight you might choose to sit quietly beneath the Moon for a few moments. You may wish to light a candle, hold a favourite crystal, write in a journal, or simply take a slow walk beneath the evening sky.

There is no right way to connect.

The Moon asks for presence rather than perfection.

If you work with crystals, many people enjoy placing them outside or on a windowsill during a Full Moon. While scientific evidence does not support the idea that moonlight physically charges crystals, many crystal enthusiasts use Full Moon rituals as a symbolic practice of intention, reflection, and mindfulness. The ritual itself often becomes a powerful moment of connection.

This Blue Moon feels particularly fitting as we move towards summer.

The days are longer.

Nature is thriving.

The world feels brighter.

Yet beneath all of that light, many of us are still carrying questions, worries, hopes, and unfinished stories.

Perhaps tonight is not about finding all the answers.

Perhaps it is simply about creating enough stillness to hear yourself again.

So wherever you are tonight, take a moment to look up.

A rare Blue Moon is rising above us.

Not to change your life overnight.

But perhaps to remind you that growth happens in cycles, healing takes time, and sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause long enough to notice how far we have already come.

Blessings under the Blue Moon.
